ROOSEVELT

2-3-2004

After spotting the Roosevelt Rough Riders a quick 2-0 lead, Reedley point guard Jon Lepp quickly dribbled the ball down the court and found Abel Lucca in the right corner.  Lucca drilled the three point shot and was fouled.  He made the free throw to complete the four-point play and the Pirates never looked back.

By the time Jon Wallen stole an errant pass and raced the length of the court for a lay-up the score was 20-3.  The Pirates stretched the lead to 31 late in the third quarter when Jordan Penner took a pass from Andrew Busch and converted the drive to push the score to 59-28.  The Pirates then coasted to the finish line, winning in the end 75-56.

Colin Hofer noted that "it was a good team effort and everyone played well."  The Pirates played an unselfish brand of basketball by consistently making crisp passes for easy buckets.  Of particular note was Lepp's late first quarter bounce pass from past mid-court that sliced through the Roosevelt defense to the grateful Hofer.

The only concern following the game was the physical condition of Lepp and Pepijn Dekker.  Lepp aggravated his back early in the fourth quarter and Dekker spent most of the second half with an ice pack on his knee.  Both players indicated that they would be ready for the McLane game on Thursday night.

Offensively, the Pirates modeled a balanced scoring attack.  Wallen led the team with 17, senior Ian Brinkman played a strong game and finished with 12, Penner contributed 11, Hofer 10, and Lucca nine.  Lepp had nine assists on the night.

With the victory the Pirates improved their NYL record to 5-1 and their overall mark to 17-3.
