KINGSBURG

1-13-2004

The Reedley Pirates improved their season record to 12-2 with a solid victory, 68-34, over the Kingsburg Vikings.  The game was Reedley's final contest prior to the start of North Yosemite League action.  The Pirates open NYL action this Thursday when they face Roosevelt in Fresno.

The Reedley hoopsters started slowly, moving to a modest 13-9 advantage after one quarter.  The Pirates cranked up the defense in the second quarter, limiting the Vikings just four points while posting 19 themselves.  The PIrates led 32-13 at the half, propelled largely by the all-around play of Colin Hofer, who had 15 at the break.

The Vikings came out of the half-time break like gangbusters, closing the lead to ten at 33-23.  But then the Pirates went on a 19-0 run, vanquishing all of Kingsburg's hopes.  The Reedley five spread the scoring around during the decisive run as Hofer, Jose Alvarez, Ian Brinkman, Jon Lepp, Jon Wallen, Abel Lucca, and Andrew Busch all lofted shots through the net.

Coach Darren Minami was satisfied that his team held the Vikings to just 34 points.  Minami assigned Lepp to cover Kingsburg's Josh Kaprelian and the senior responded by limiting the high-scoring Viking guard to just 12 points, half his average.

On the night the Pirates were led in scoring by Hofer with 22, Lucca with 17, and Wallen with 10.
