The Reedley Pirates
advanced to the championship game of the Kingsburg Tournament with a
solid 69-48 victory over the youthful Immanuel Eagles. The
Pirates play Caruthers on Saturday night in the championship game of
the tournament. Reedley was led in scoring by Jon Wallen with
22, Colin Hofer with 14, and Abel Lucca with 13.
This early season game
took on added import given the fact that Reedley and Immanuel, though
residents of the same town, have not met each other in a boys
basketball game since, according to one annonymous source in the
stands, 1957.
Reedley opened the game
playing a furious man-to-man which disrupted the Eagles' offensive
flow. Wallen scored on two drives to the hoop and Hofer added
one of his own to launch the Pirates' scoring. Both teams
appeared tight during the first quarter which ended with the PIrates
holding a 11-3 advantage.
The Pirates held a 15
point lead entering the final quarter when they went on a ten point
run in the first 90 seconds of the quarter to seal the contest.
Jordan Penner began the quarter with a three point play, Lucca arched
a trey from the right side, Jose Alvarez scored on a steal and drive,
and Jon Lepp stylishly flashed to the hoop to finish the outburst.
The physical contest
saw Pirates Pepijn Dekker and Lucca both go down hard. Lucca twisted
his ankle but pronounced himself ready to play in the championship
game.
With the win coach
Darren Minami's Pirates moved to 5-0 on the young season.
