Coach Darren Minami
and his Reedley Pirates turned back the Fresno Warriors 73-52 in
tonight's North Yosemite League game at the Warriors' gym.
With the victory the Pirates notched their 19th win of the season
against three losses. Reedley stands at 7-1 in NYL play and
the Pirates go to bed tonight in no worse than a first place tie
with the Sunnyside Wildcats.
Fresno opened the
game with two three point shots to take a quick 6-0 advantage.
But the Pirates righted the ship, Pepijn Dekker finding Abel Lucca
for a basket and one. With that three point play the
Pirates began their journey towards another win, taking the lead for
good on Jordan Penner's drive to the hoop at the 2:35 mark.
Reedley was ahead 13-12 and Minami's team never relinquished the
lead. The Pirates earned a 19-14 first quarter advantage, and
led at the half 38-25. The lead stretched to as many as 25 in
the fourth quarter.
The Pirates normally
rely on their three point shooting ability but tonight eschewed the
long-distance shots for the beauty and simplicity of the lay-up.
Colin Hofer's late first quarter three pointer was the Pirates only
trey on the night. All night long the Pirates worked their
offense to find open lanes to the basket.
The Pirates featured
a balanced scoring attack as all eleven Reedley hoopsters scored.
Jon Wallen played a strong game at both ends of the court and
finished with 16. Jon Lepp offered his usual dynamic
leadership and tallied 12. Hofer followed with 10 and Ian
Brinkman chipped in 8. Penner added 6, Lucca 5, Dekker 5,
Andrew Busch 4, Jose Alvarez 4, Chris Ochoa 2, and Stephen Tasy 1 to
complete the scoring.
Thursday night the
Pirates travel to Edison to take on the Tigers. The regular
season concludes next Tuesday night when the Pirates entertain
Sunnyside.
