EDISON

1-27-2004

The Reedley Pirates came from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat the Edison Tigers 62-54 in a crucial NYL encounter.  With the victory the Pirates improved to 4-0 in league action and 16-2 on the season.

The Pirates trailed 48-41 early in the final quarter when Jon Wallen scored three baskets and Abel Lucca added a hoop of his own to pull the Pirates within one at 50-49.  Reedley took the lead at 51-50 with just under three minutes remaining on a basket by Pepijn Dekker off of an assist from Colin Hofer.  Then Jon Lepp took over, scoring all his six points on the night in the final 2:24 to secure the win.

It was a game of wild momentum swings.  Coach Darren Minami said that "it was a game of runs and we had the run at the end."  Indeed the Reedley coach saw his team's 16-10 first quarter lead evaporate as the lightening quick Tigers blazed to a 16-0 run to open the second quarter.

Edison's quickness and rebounding prowess, especially on the offensive boards, plagued the Pirates all night long.  However, in the final minutes the Pirates maintained their composure and Dekker, Hofer, and Wallen all grabbed big rebounds down the stretch.  In the end it was, as coach Minami stated, "a great win for the program."

Wallen led the Pirates in scoring with 16.  Hofer followed with 14 and Lucca tallied 11.
