DINUBA

12-9-2003

The Reedley High Pirates used a dominating second quarter to grab a commanding lead, and then coasted to a relaxed 76-56 victory over the Dinuba Emperors in their opening contest of the Kingsburg Basketball Tournament.

The Emperors came out with an aggressive full court press and grabbed the early advantage.  The veteran Pirates maintained their poise led by the calming influence of point guard Jon Lepp, caught the Dinuba five, and posted a 21-17 first quarter lead.  The Pirates put a stranglehold on the game in the second quarter by playing stifling defense.  Dinuba managed only four points in the enitre quarter.

The Pirates surge was sparked by the inspirational play of Abel Lucca.  The speedy Lucca connected on a trio of three point shots, and led the Pirates in scoring at the game's mid-point with 13.

Coach Darren Minami employed his entire squad in the second half as the Pirates coasted to the victory.  The second half highlight was a surgically executed alley-oop  from Colin Hofer to Lepp, who delicately deposited the exquisite pass into the net.  The basket gave the Pirates a comfortable 66-42 lead.

The Pirates were led in scoring by Jon Wallen with 23 points.  Lucca tallied 16.
