Nice to win the
championship:
The Reedley Pirates put
on a defensive clinic in roaring to the championship of the Kingsburg
Lions Club Tournament by trumping the Caruthers Blue Raiders 79-47.
Colin Hofer scored
eight points in the first four minutes of the contest as the Pirates
jumped to an early lead. Meanwhile, point guard Jon Lepp
showed no mercy in hounding his Blue Raider counterpart into
numerous turnovers, and on offense dished out more assists than a
short-order cook.
The Darren Minami
coached Pirates employed both a man-to-man defense and a zone in
handing Caruthers their first loss of the young season. With
the victory the Pirates improved to 6-0 on the young campaign.
Reedley led 41-28 at
the half and stretched the lead in the second half, quieting the
passionate Caruthers fans. The Pirates played with a lethal
combination of poise and speed, giving their fans reason to cheer.
For the first time
this season Jon Wallen did not lead the Pirates in scoring.
Reedley was paced by the dynamic duo of Hofer and Abel Lucca
who both tallied 22 points. Lepp scored 11 and Wallen added
six.
After the game a
satisfied coach Minami accepted the championship trophy. Jon
Wallen was named the most valuable player of the tournament.
Jon Lepp was named the tourney's most inspirational player.
Abel Lucca and Colin Hofer were both named to the all-tournament
team.
